Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make your own ice cream?
Yes. All of our ice cream is manufactured fresh on the premises. As a matter of fact, we have a full size window that allows customers to look into our production area and watch our ice cream production right here in the shop.

Are you open year round?
Yes. We are open all year. Our hours of operation do change with the various seasons, so be sure to check our current hours.

Why is it called "England's" MicroCreamery and not "New England"?
"England" is the last name of the owners, Joshua and Jane England.

What is a "Micro Creamery"?
Micro: small
Creamery: an establishment where dairy products are prepared
This describes us perfectly!

Where are you located?
We are located at 109 Washington Street in fabulous downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Detailed Driving Directions

Are you a franchise?
No. England's MicroCreamery is independent and the "brain child" of Joshua and Jane England. This is our only location at the moment, however we are open to entertaining the idea of future expansion for a satellite location.

How do you make your ice cream?
All of our ice cream is made fresh on the premises using a 14% fresh sweet cream base and freezing the product via a 20qt batch freezer.

How did you learn to make ice cream?
Josh gave Jane her very first ice cream maker for her 18th birthday and she has been making ice cream ever since. Jane received her formal training from Penn State's Ice Cream Short Course as well as the Successful Ice Cream Retailer's Seminar. Jane also received her hands-on instruction from Ice Cream University.

Do you offer field trips and parties?
Yes. Please see our detailed information regarding Tours & Parties.

Do you have inside seating?
Yes. We have inside seating for approximately 25 people. We have some lovely comfortable upholstered chairs where you can sit, relax, watch TV, play a game, read the paper and/or sip a cappuccino. In addition, there is outside seating available in the park adjacent to our shop (weather permitting).

Why do you sell your ice cream by weight?
Selling by weight is easy and insures that you get exactly what you want!! Selling by weight allows you to mix and swirl as many combinations as you want. You get what you pay for and pay for what get. You are in charge. We will scoop the ice cream as big or as small as you want, add as many mix-ins as you want and at the end we will just ring it right into the register.

What is the difference between a milk shake and a frappe?
In Massachusetts, a "milk shake" does NOT have any ice cream in it, it is just syrup and milk blended together. Literally milk shaken. So a chocolate milk shake in Massachusetts is basically chocolate milk. It is a "frappe" that has the ice cream, milk and syrup all blended together and is nice and thick. So what the rest of the country refers to as a milk shake, we in Massachusetts call a frappe. Incidentally, in Rhode Island it is called a "cabinet". (Jane grew up in RI)

What is the difference between a Sweet Cream and Butter Cream?
Sweet Cream is the most basic ice cream before any flavoring is added to it, so it is even more pure than vanilla because there isn't even any vanilla extract in it. Sweet Cream is very simple, very fresh, just like frozen whipped cream.
Butter Cream is a butter based ice cream similar to butterscotch or butter pecan (but without the pecans already in it).

Why is your mint ice cream white?
We do not add any food coloring to our ice cream. It is not natural for mint ice cream or pistachio ice cream to be green, people add a food dye for it to be that color. We keep our ice cream pure.

Do you sell frozen yogurt?
Yes. We offer a soft serve frozen yogurt. We have vanilla or chocolate or we can twist them together for you. (The yogurt is good, but the ICE CREAM IS AMAZING!!)

Do you offer anything non-fat or low-fat?
Yes. Both of our yogurts are non-fat. Sorbet, which is a water ice containing no dairy products, is another non-fat option as well. Sherbet is also available, which is low-fat. (I do have to reiterate, our ice cream is of the highest quality, so don't gyp yourself!! GO FOR THE ICE CREAM, you KNOW you want it).

Do you offer anything with no sugar?
Yes. We have a no sugar added soft serve vanilla yogurt. (However, unless you have a health condition that requires you to have a no sugar added product, my recommendation is to GET THE ICE CREAM. The ice cream is what we do BEST and you know that is what you REALLY want anyway!!)

Do you have soft serve?
Yes. We offer a soft serve frozen yogurt. (Again, it is our fabulous fresh ice cream of which we are so proud (not the soft serve), so go for the good stuff!)
